I would love to hear from anyone who has an interest in Warford or Marthall;  I would like this to become a community resource, so please contact me with your old photographs, stories and connections with the area.

I also have a keen interest in historic landscape characterisation, application and analysis and was recently invited by South Trafford Archaeology Group to speak on the landscape history of Great Warford.

Take a look at my research website: to see what has caught my interest this month and to find out how to book a talk for your community group.

  1. I am on the local Wilmslow & Alderley NSPCC fund raising committee and we are celebrating 50 years of fundraising in this area. The Wilmslow Committee was formed in October 1965 by Mrs Edith Norah Boddington (nee Agnew). We know that she was born 1901 at Warford Hall. A relative in the family, Thomas Agnew, a banker from Liverpool, originally came up with the idea of a society for the protection of children following a visit to New York. So the family obviously have strong ties with the NSPCC.

I’m trying to find out about Edith Norah’s sibling(s). We think she had a sister Ann (married name Midwood). We think Ann formed the Alderley Edge NSPCC Committee around the same time as her sister Edith Norah formed the Wilmslow Committee.

Norah married Charles Boddington of the brewery company and was awarded an OBE in 1985 for her services to the NSPCC in the North West.

I just wondered if you had any information on the Agnew family in Great Warford around the early 20th century. If so, I would very much welcome it.

We are wanting to use the history of these two sisters in the area to promote our 50th anniversary fundraising.

  2. My family name is Warford, and we are mostly English I am told. Any connection to Great Warford? I believe our ancestor is a John Warford that would have come over to the states around 1650. Curious if there is any history there. Hope to here back from you and thanks in advance. Terri
