Private Herbert Bowden
Herbert was born on the 18 April 1883 and christened at Great Warford Methodist Chapel on 31st May. His parents were Frederick and Martha Bowden, (nee Pownall) who were married at All Saints Church in Marthall on 18 May 1882. Sadly Martha died just two years later and Frederick went on to marry Elizabeth Hague. The family lived at Mainwaring Farm in Great Warford in 1891, but by 1911, had moved to Rose Cottage.
In 1915, Herbert joined up as Member of the Army Veterinary Corps, Service No: 23163.
His Service record shows he obtained a Shoeing Certificate in 1916, after attending a course of instruction at the School of Farriery, Woolwich and became qualified to perform the duties of a Shoeing Smith.
Herbert went on to marry Edith Wood and they had a daughter, Martha Mabel.
Herbert died in 1959 and is buried along with his daughter in Alderley Edge Cemetery.
